Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve
Mysterious and seductive, the Amazon Rainforest encompasses not only the largest forest in the world, but it is perhaps the least known natural wonder on earth. Come ramble through its waterways and primary jungle teaming with life. Our silent approach with hand-carved canoes, as natural to the animal’s eye as a floating log, guarantees intimate contact with all aspects of this astonishing environment. Beneath a solid canopy of brilliant stars and surrounded by an incessant symphony of nature, you will experience the sensations of the Amazon that only a few will ever know.
Why visit the Cuyabeno Reserve?
Spanning a surface area of over 603,300 hectares in the Ecuadorian Amazon, the Cuyabeno Reserve is one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world. This tropical primary rainforest is home to over 500 species of birds, 450 species of fish, hundreds of species of mammals, reptiles, and amphibians, and an estimated 12,000 plant species. Pink river dolphins, caimans, piranhas, monkeys, and macaws are among the most unique species found in this region. In addition to the stunning flora and fauna, seven indigenous communities live within the protected boundaries of Cuyabeno and continue to practice traditional customs such as Shamanism (ancient medicinal practices). Biodiversity and cultural traditions unite in this fascinating and unique environment.
Our Lodge: Cuyabeno River Lodge
Cuyabeno River Lodge sits upon 300 acres in our privately protected zone of the Cuyabeno Reserve. Our mission is to promote ecotourism in an environmentally and culturally safe manner, consciously protecting the delicate jungle habitat and working with the local indigenous communities to safely expose Cuyabeno´s natural and cultural beauty to its visitors. Our standard four or five-day jungle tours include a stay in our native cabins (with private bathrooms) on the banks of the Cuyabeno River, jungle hikes with a bilingual guide, learning about medicinal plants, visiting the Laguna Grande, preparing a traditional food dish with an indigenous family, rowing in native-style canoes, piranha fishing, bird observation, and nocturnal animal walks. Between activities, there is plenty of time to rest in our hammocks or cool off in the Cuyabeno River for a unique and relaxing experience.
